Its not Stephanie Monroe's fault that the small town folk of Mayfield can't tell the difference between her haute couture and lady-of-the-evening wear. Books I have not finished reading:

The Confessions of Saint Augustine--Read only the selections required for class work in a Penguin edition. Purchased this QPBC edition at a thrift store a few years back but have yet to open it.

Moby Dick: Three times I have started this book, and three times have failed to finsih it. I got about 3/4ths the way through this handsome 150th year Penguin Trade Edition and may yet give it another goal. This book truly is my white whale.

Swann's Way: Marcel Proust--everyone should read him. Sadly, I have only managed 174 pages of this Penguin edition of the first volume of what I knew in college as "Remembrance of Things Past." At least I have read about the madeleines.

Beowulf: Heaney's Translation, hardbound; I don't have any excuses--this is the best modernized version in print. I suffered through several stanzas in the archaic English and have never yet summoned the courage to return.

Ulysses: I have done well with Joyce--I read "Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man" with eagerness and finished "Finnegan's Wake" while in college. "Ulysses" has been a journey of frustration--two starts, with defeat before Bloom's mid-morning, although I have read the later third of the final chapter, including the famous, breathless, "...yes, I will, yes Yes!" I like ths handsome Random House hardbound edition even though it is missing the dust jacket.

There. I feel better now. Confessions make the heart pure!

Augustine is one of the greatest thinkers that the world has ever known, and it shines through in "The Confessions of St. Augustine". In this book, Augustine manages to cover an amazing number of topics, and does so in a beautiful way, filled with prayers to God. "The Confessions of St. Augustine" is a beautiful book. Augustines gradual turn toward God is glorious. This book beautifully illustrates the human ability for transformation and transcendence. Along with Meister Eckhart and Thomas Aquinas, "The Confessions of St. Augustine" gives one a good grasp of the early Christian and Catholic theory.
